I think that TV execs have learned something from the success of Once Upon a Time, the show based off of the Snow White tale. If you take a classic tale and give it an updated story line and decent actors you can create a cool--and more importantly successful-- TV show.
Like FOX has with its new sure to be hit Sleepy Hollow.
The story is based on something most of us are familiar with; a brilliant move in my mind. How better to attract an audience than to give them something they already know? This story is not just like the original of course; just based off of it.
With the changes to the original tale the producers are able to give viewers what they love most--a crime procedural with a supernatural twist.
Pretty much what happens is this. The story starts back during the Revolutionary War with Ichabod Crane cutting off the head of the eventual Headless Horseman. He is injured in the battle, but when he comes to he is climbing out of a grave in modern day times. The problem is that the Headless Horseman is too.
As it turns out, the Headless Horseman is one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse--Death.
How either one woke up in modern times is unknown, but we find out that Crane's wife was in a witch's coven and is someone how involved in the whole mess.
I could tell you more, but I don't want to ruin it for you.
Because yes, you want to watch this. It has all the elements of a good show. The cast is good enough to tell the story, but is not going to overshadow it or take away from it (although Orlando Jones may have been miscast).
In the story you have a supernatural element mixed in with a crime story--two of the most poular things on television. Where this one is going to win out over other shows will be with the humor mixed in throughout the story. There are plenty of little jokes based off the differences in society now compared to pre-Revolutionary War society.
The first episode sets the story real well so if you haven't seen it try and find it online or OnDemand. If you can't you'll be fine if you start in with the second episode Monday night at 9 PM ET.
